Cucumber Seed Sowing Guide

Before sowing, it is important to check whether the cucumber seeds are pre-treated with protective chemicals. Most commercially available hybrid and open-pollinated cucumber seeds come treated to safeguard against soil-borne diseases.

If the seeds are not pre-treated, farmers are advised to treat them using recommended fungicides or bio-treatments under expert guidance. Proper seed treatment helps prevent fungal infection.

Once the seeds are prepared, they can be sown directly in the main field or raised in nursery beds or seed trays, depending on the cultivation method.

Time of Sowing Cucumber Seeds

• North Indian Plains: Cucumber sowing in this region is ideally done between February and March.
• Hilly Regions: Cucumber seeds are generally sown during April to May.
• South India: In southern states, cucumber seeds are best sown in the October–November season.

However, the exact time of sowing varies based on the local climate, method, and various other factors.

Method of Sowing Cucumber Seeds

Cucumber seeds can be planted using different methods such as raised beds, furrows, or pit sowing. In the bed system, farmers usually place two seeds per hill, positioned on both sides of the raised bed for better vine spread and growth.

For the pit method, pits of 45 × 45 × 60 cm are prepared and filled with a mixture of FYM, cattle manure, and soil. In each pit, 3 to 4 cucumber seeds are sown. Maintaining a spacing of 1.5 to 3 meters between rows and 60 to 90 cm between plants is suitable for proper vine development and airflow.
